Michigan Brain Injury Lawyer – Choosing The Right One

November 23rd 2009 by Daniel Buckfire

Michigan brain injury lawyers frequently represent individuals who suffer brain injuries due to trauma.  These injuries can come from car accidents, motorcycle accidents, slip and falls, work-related accidents, and other accidents.

According to the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, causes of a traumatic brain injury include:

  • Falls (28%)
  • Motor Vehicle Traffic Accidents (20%)
  • Struck by/against events, which would include being hit with a ball or running into something (19%)
  • Assaults (11%)

A traumatic brain injury can cause a serious disability and the effects can be permanent. Recognize the symptoms of a traumatic brain injury:

  • Coma
  • Persistent headaches or neck pain
  • Difficulty remembering, paying attention, or making decisions
  • Slowness in thinking, speaking, acting, or reading
  • Getting lost or easily confused
  • Feeling tired or lacking energy
  • Mood changes
  • Changes in sleeping patterns
  • Light-headedness, dizziness, or loss of balance
  • Nausea
  • Increased sensitivity to light, sound, or distractions
  • Blurred vision
  • Loss of sense of smell or taste
  • Ringing in the ears

A traumatic brain injury can cause a wide range of functional changes affecting thinking, sensation, language, and emotions.   The changes often have negative effects on marriages, families, and friendships.  Brain injury patients are often unable to return to work and suffer a significant impairment of earnings and earning potential.

Victims of serious brain injuries often require lifetime medical care and rehabilitation.  Many brain injury victims cannot be cared for by their families due to special needs and must move into specialized housing with highly trained support staff to provide the necessary supervision and care.  Others can still live at home but need attendant care services and twenty-four hour supervision.
