Hurt at Work in Iowa: Traumatic Brain Injury
November 07th 2009 by Corey Walker
There are many people out there who take health risks everyday just to do their job for their employer. For example working around heavy machinery or equipment may increase your risk of getting injured on the job. Traumatic brain injuries occur when a person’s head violently and suddenly hits an object or when an object pierces the skull and touches the brain tissue. Your symptoms and condition will depend on how hard you were hit in the head and how severe your injury is.
If you sustain a mild traumatic brain injury you will more than likely experience: headache, possible confusion, lightheadedness, dizziness, blurred vision, ringing in the ears, fatigue, change in sleep patterns, behavioral or mood changes and trouble with memory loss, concentration, attention, or thinking.
A more serious or severe injury may have these symptoms as well, but also experience: repeated vomiting, a headache that won’t go away, weakness, slurred speech, loss of coordination, increased confusion, seizures, restlessness, dilation of one or both pupils.
Not all brain injury patients need to have surgery, but about half of severely injured patients do. You are in serious risk of a disability resulting from a head injury. If you have signs of a severe traumatic brain injury you should see a medical provider immediately. If severe damage has been done it might not be possible to “fix or reverse the damage done. The main thing your doctor will be worried about is making sure you are getting the proper amount of oxygen and blood to your brain. Once you are stable, your doctor will perform a CT scan to determine what part of your brain injured and if you need surgery.
