Here are a few tips, which may be helpful before you sit down to talk with your children. First, do not hide the problem from your kids. Explain what it means to deal with debt. Be honest and straightforward. Tell them exactly what went wrong. Understand that bankruptcy affects your children too. Tell them how they can help trim expenditures.

Talk to them how they can be a part of the solution. Come up with a financial plan for your family’s future and explain it to them. Don’t just tell your children about the problems you are going through. Also tell them about your solution to the problem. Instead of leaving them with a sense of fear and uncertainty, explaining things to them will comfort your children with the knowledge that something can be done about the problem and you are doing everything to solve the problem.

Make sure you answer all of their questions. It is also absolutely critical that they understand very clearly that this is not their fault. Although you may assume that they know, that may not always be the case. Be sure to tell them clearly that none of this is their fault. It is also important that you continue to update them. You may want to tell them how your job interview went or if you have paid off some debts.

Finally, explain to them that money is important, but that it’s not everything. It is important to stress that you have each other, that you love each other and that you can face these tough times together as a family. • Look for scholarship programs. They are offered by many different organizations and this could keep you from racking up as much student loan debt.
