What is Autism Speaks?

Autism Speaks is dedicated to increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders, to funding research into the causes, prevention and treatments for autism, and to advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families.

It was founded in February 2005 by Suzanne and Bob Wright, the grandparents of a child with autism. Bob Wright is Senior Advisor at Lee Equity Partners and served as vice chairman, General Electric, and chief executive officer of NBC for more than twenty years.

Every 15 minutes, another family receives the devastating news that their child has an autism spectrum disorder. Walk Now for Autism Speaks is a fun-filled, family friendly event and is the single most powerful force to fund vital research that will lead us to the answers we need.

How We Give Back

Being a part of Orange County as a law firm for over 30 years has made us appreciate this marvelous part of California. Benbo’s allergic reaction sent her into anaphylactic shock and she died from cardiac arrest and respiratory failure only hours later. The lawsuit is being brought against church owners Glories Powell and Lula Davis by Brianna’s mother Bridgette Jennings-Benbo. Powell can be seen ranting and raving in several youtube videos of her sermon, and from the videos, it seems her shock and awe performances are volatile and even dangerous.

Negligence and Wrongful Death in Nevada

The lawsuit claims that the capsules ingested by Benbo contained many ingredients, all of which weren’t known by the church, and included bee pollen which has been known to cause fatalities in people that are allergic to it. Despite these facts, the church still thought it was alright to give the pills to teenagers.

Brian Chase said, “The Defendants acted negligently, recklessly and tortuously by administering a potentially deadly cocktail of bee pollen and other chemicals to a girl with severe allergies to the substance.” He continued, “Not only did they manufacture and distribute the supplement while ignoring its health risks, they provided no warning to parishioners about its possible side effects. In short, their actions are directly responsible for Brianna’s unnecessary and untimely death.”

Bisnar | Chase is seeking damages for not only the negligence and wrongful death, but for compensation for Brianna’s mother for grief, mental anguish, sorrow, and mental and physical pain, as well as funeral and burial costs.

Thanh Williamson, a mother from Utah, was restrained in her family’s 1993 Mazda MPV when the vehicle was involved in a car accident. Williamson was sitting in the second row of the minivan, wearing the single lap belt, but the force of the accident caused her body to jackknife around the lap belt, and she suffered fatal internal injuries.

The Williamson family claims that the automaker was negligent by choosing an unsafe restraining system, and that installing a lap and shoulder seat belt in the minivan might have saved their loved one’s life. Lawyers representing Mazda Motor of America, Inc. say that their choice to install the lap belt was legal, and California courts had previously dismissed the case.

Now the Supreme Court will let this wrongful death case proceed, and the choice of automakers to choose ineffective and unsafe designs in their vehicles, despite that the designs may comply with standards, will be confronted and challenged.

Brian Chase, senior partner at BISNAR | CHASE, explains that “Wednesday’s ruling, and the subsequent results of the case against Mazda, could have a tremendous impact not only on U.S. automakers but on California auto defect plaintiffs. Simply put, it demonstrates that even though automakers comply — or say they’re compliant — with federal safety standards, they may face increased liability for serious personal injuries or wrongful death if those safety standards fail to adequately protect motorists.”

Being aware of short and long-term symptoms of concussions can help people make smart life decisions after suffering an injury or in order to avoid injury. Here are some guidelines to short-term concussion-related symptoms:

Physical Symptoms: Headaches, vertigo, lightheadedness, change in sleep patterns, tinnitus, coma, blurred vision, vomiting, loss of consciousness, feeling dazed, difficulty with mobility and coordination.

Emotional Symptoms: Mood swings and personality change, depression, anxiety, fear of future injury, feelings of helplessness, frustration, feeling easily overwhelmed, feelings of guilt.

Cognitive Symptoms: Loss of concentration, partial or total memory loss, difficulty talking, slow reaction time.

Long-term concussive effects that may last for many months or years after a brain injury include long-term memory loss, emotional distress, slowing in certain movements, depression, and increased possibility of suicidal tendencies. Recovery from traumatic brain injury can be a long and slow process, and having had a concussion makes the possibility of suffering one in a future accident much more likely and severe.

Not all concussions are serious, however, but being knowledgeable on the topic is important, especially for parents with small children, or for people who may injure their heads in certain activities.

In 2002, Thanh Williamson, of Utah, was wearing her seatbelt in the second row of her family’s 1993 Mazda MPV minivan when the vehicle was involved in a car accident. Despite being properly restrained in the lap seat belt at the time of the accident, Williamson sustained fatal internal injuries that seem to be caused by the force on her body against the single lap belt. The case alleges that the seat belt installed in the Mazda, that was supposed to protect Williamson, was ineffective, and a safer lap-and-shoulder seat belt should have been installed instead.

Mazda has since argued that the single lap belt complies with federal safety standards, and that they are not responsible for the wrongful death of Williamson. Lawyers representing Mazda Motor of America, Inc., explained that the automaker was given a choice as to which seat belt would be installed in the minivan rear inner seat, and their choice was legal.

Williamson’s family had been rejected from the California state courts until now, where the Supreme Court has granted a bid to hear the case. The family, on behalf of their mother and wife, claim that the automaker was negligent for choosing an unsafe restraining system which caused the death of their loved one.

Brian Chase, of BISNAR | CHASE, comments that the decision to hear this case means a lot for the auto industry and victims of auto defect accidents.

“Wednesday’s ruling, and the subsequent results of the case against Mazda, could have a tremendous impact not only on U.S. automakers but on California auto defect plaintiffs,” said Chase. “Simply put, it demonstrates that even though automakers comply — or say they’re compliant — with federal safety standards, they may face increased liability for serious personal injuries or wrongful death if those safety standards fail to adequately protect motorists.”

Chase explained further that the case will expose how ridiculous it is to give automakers safe and unsafe options, and that both apparently meet safety standards.

“From the get-go, it was ludicrous to give automakers like Mazda the option of installing a less-expensive, less-safe seat belt configuration versus a more expensive, safer one,” said Chase. “I mean, let’s face it. To say, ‘you’re going to be compliant with the less expensive option’ is a recipe for disaster. A majority of the time, safety will be compromised for the bottom line. Yesterday’s ruling could very well change all that.”
